Basics Flashcards
What is a self-selecting sample?
The person volunteers to take part
What is an opportunity sample?
When people who are available at the time are used in the study
What is an independent variable?
The aspect being changed in the study (creates the two or more groups)
What is a dependent variable?
The aspect being measured in the study
What is a high level of controls?
Where as much of the study as possible is kept the same for all participants
What is quantitative data?
When the score is in a number format
What is qualitative data?
When data is in written format eg a quote or a description of behaviour
What is an advantage of conducting a study as a lab experiment?
There can be a high control over extraneous variables and a high level of standardisation
What is a disadvantage of conducting a study as a lab experiment?
It can cause unnatural behaviour and it is also easier for participants to guess the aim of the study and alter behaviour accordingly
What is one advantage of quantitative data?
Easy to identify patterns and make into graphs
What is one disadvantage of quantitative data?
It lacks detail and explanation
What is one advantage of qualitative data?
It is rich and detailed giving a good insight
What is one disadvantage of qualitative data?
It has to be interpreted which allows for researcher bias to effect conclusions
What is one advantage of a self-selecting sample?
Since participants volunteered they are more likely to understand the study and give informed consent
What is one advantage of an opportunity sample?
It is quick easy and cheap to gather
