What is archaeology ?
the study of human history and prehistory through the excavation of sites and the analysis of artifacts and other physical remains - the material culture of societies
What sorts of things do archaeologists study/look to find
buildings, housewares, tools, architecture, ceramics, flint tools, coins, bone and plant findings, written findings, jewelery, art, weapons
What is the time frame of archaeology?
archaeology begins with the emergence of man as a manufacturer of tools and ends (according to law established by John Gerstang in 1920) in 1720.
What is the relationship between material culture and natural/political boundaries?
Material culture does not necessarily follow political or natural boundaries
List the archaeological time periods/ages up until the late bronze age
- Paleolithic (pre-historic): lower (tachton), middle (tichon), upper (elion), epi-paleolithic/final (epi)
- Neolithic (proto-historic): pre-ceramic ceramic (kdam kerami), ceramic (kerami)
- Chalcolithic (proto-historic)
- Bronze Age (biblical): early (kduma), middle (baynimit), late middle (tichona), late (meucheret)
