Basic Science Flashcards
Identify the 5 levels of structure complexity and describe each of them.
- Biochemical - elements, molecules and organelles.
- Cellular - basic unit of living matter.
- Tissue - group of similar, associated cells which perform a specific function.
- Organ - group of physically associated tissues which operate together.
- System - group of organs and tissues that perform a gross function.
Define chemical elements.
Irreducible unique units
Which 4 elements make up 96% of the body?
Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen
Define isotopes.
Different forms of the same element; caused by varying numbers in neutrons.
What are chemical reactions?
Interactions between atoms involving electrons, bonds form to produce molecules or compounds.
State the difference between ionic and covalent bonds.
Ionic bonds are formed by the transfer of electrons.
Covalent bonds are formed by shared electrons
Identify the equation for the formation of ATP
ADP + P + E = ATP
What is a solvent?
A dissolving fluid medium
What is a solute?
Dissolved liquid
What is a solution?
Solvent + Solute
What are suspensions?
Buoyant solids
What is a colloid?
A proteinaceous medium.
Explain the pH scale.
pH measures acidity/alkalinity. 0-6 = acidic, 7 = neutral, 8-14 = alkaline.
