Root
main part of the word that describes what the word is about; Examples: cardio = heart
phleb = vein
Prefix
A word element that is added before the root, at the beginning of the word. Example: endo = inside
Suffix
A word element that is added after the root, at the end of the word. Example: itis = inflammation
tomy = cut or incision
Combining vowel
Sometimes a vowel (usually i, o, u, or y) is added to make a word easier to pronounce.
Medical terms
Greek or Latin origins
Example: vessel – vascillum, capillary – capillus
Greek and Latin meaning can be the same, ren = kidney
Greek and Latin meaning can be very different, ped = can be either foot or child
