Basic Life Support + Risk Assessment Flashcards
Cardiac Arrest
Is the abrupt stoppage of normal circulation of the blood due to failure of the heart to pump effectively
Causes of Cardiac Arrest
- Myocardial Ischaemia (angina, heart attack)
- Hypoxia
- Electrocution
Two types of CA Rhythms
Ventricular Fibrillation (shockable)
Asystole & Pulseless Electrical Activity (non-shockable)
What times are brain damage and brain death likely to happen?
Brain damage - 4 min
Brain death - 10 min

Interface Pressure
the pressure of the body pressing the skin down onto a firm surface
Shear
the pressure that occurs when layers of skin are forced to slide over one another or deeper layers of tissue
Friction
pressure caused by something, such as a mattress or clothing, rubbing against the surface of the skin
Stages of pressure ulcers
Stage 1 - Non-blanchable erythema of intact skin
Stage 2 - partial-thickness skin loss
Stage 3 - full-thickness skin loss, not involving underlying fascia
Stage 4 - full-thickness skin loss with extensive destruction
