What is Stewarship?
Humans are stewards or caretakers of life and the divine gifts of nature, and are accountable to life and the world.
It entails respecting the sanctity of life and the environment.
What is the principle of totality?
Respect for the dignity of the whole person and integrity of human life. It applies to the human body, human life journey from conception to death, and human behavior based on fetal psychology research.
What is autonomy?
Respect for people’s decisions and values. It gives patients rights over their own bodies and health conditions.
What is principle of double effect?
indirect voluntariness or voluntary in causa refers to an act desired not as an end in itself but as a foreseen effect or consequence of an act.
What is beneficence?
The duties to prevent and remove harm, and promote good. It includes not inflicting harm, preventing harm, removing harm, and promoting good.
What is nonmaleficence?
The duty to avoid harming others, specifically patients. It requries avoiding negligent and harmful care.
What is justice?
Giving each person what is due or merited. It includes general legal justice, particular justice, commutative justice, and distributive justice in a fair distribution of healthcare resources.
What is paternalism?
The justified limitation or interference with individual autonomy for their own welfare or needs. It shows concern for patient well-being.
What is the principle of casuistry?
case-based reasoning that uses precedent cases and analogy to resolve new cases in healthcare.
What is principle of communitarianism?
prioritizes communal good over individual good, and requires communal deliberation and understanding in decision making
What is principle of epikia?
in every rule there is an exemption for the greater good
What is principle of Cooperation?
-requires prudence
- Healthcare providers must cooperate only when it upholds the integrity of their profession and benefits patients.
- Refusal to cooperate in morally objectionable situations, such as abortion, is morally commendable.
