Basic DC Electricity Flashcards
Definition of electricity?
Flow of electrons through simple materials and devices
What is the outer electron shell of an atom called?
Valence shell
Which direction do electrons flow in a circuit?
from negative to positive
Define current?
The flow of electrons through a conductor, and is what does the WORK
Define voltage?
The potential difference between positive and negative
Define resistance?
The opposition to current flow, measured in Ohms
Ohm’s Law
V = IxR , The current in a circuit is DIRECTLY proportional to the applied voltage and INVERSELY proportional to the circuit resistance
What are the four requirements for a circuit?
- Conductor
- Load
- Power Source
- Switch
What happens when two batteries are place in parallel?
Amperage (Current) is increased, Voltage stays the same
What do capacitors do?
Store energy
What happens when two batteries are placed in series?
Voltage is increased, amperage stays the same
Explain voltage in a series circuit?
Voltage drops across each load
Explain voltage in a parallel circuit?
Voltage remains the same across each branch of a parallel circuit
The work in a circuit is performed by ?
Current
What happens to current (amperage) in a parallel circuit?
Current is divided across each branch of the a parallel circuit, (relative to the resistance of each component)
