Basic concepts of organic chemistry Flashcards
HYDROCARBON
A compound containing carbon and hydrogen atoms only
SATURATED
Containing single bonds only
UNSATURATED
Contains carbon-to-carbon multiple bonds
HOMOLOGOUS SERIES
A family of compounds with similar chemical properties whose successive members differ by the addition of a -CH2- group
FUNCTIONAL GROUP
The part of the organic molecule that is largely responsible for the molecules chemical properties
ALIPHATIC
Carbon atoms are joined to each other in unbranched or branched chains
ALICYCLIC
Carbon atoms are joined to each other in rings (cyclic) structures, with or without branches
AROMATIC
Some or all of the carbon atoms are found in a benzene ring
ALKYNES
Containing at least one triple carbon-to-carbon bond
MOLECULAR FORMULA
The number and type of atoms of each elements present in a molecule
C2H6O
EMPIRICAL FORMULA
The simplest whole number ratio of the atoms of each element present in a compound
GENERAL FORMULA
The simplest algebraic formula for any member of the homologous series
C n H 2n+2
DISPLAYED FORMULA
Shows the relative positioning of all of the atoms in a molecules and the bonds between them
