basic concepts of organic chem Flashcards
hydrocarbon
a compound that contains only carbon and hydrogen
saturated hydrocarbon
contains only single carbon-carbon bonds
unsaturated hydrocarbon
contains at least one carbon-carbon multiple bond
homologous series
a group of compounds with the same functional group, but with each successive member differing by a -CH2 group
functional group
an atom/group responsible for the characteristic reactions of a compound
aromatic compound
contains a benzene ring
aliphatic compound
a compound joined together in straight chains, branched chains or non-aromatic rings
alicyclic compound
an aliphatic compound arranged in non-aromatic rings
structural formula
shows the minimum detail for the arrangement of atoms eg CH3CH2CH3
displayed formula
shows all the bonds in the structure
skeletal formula
hides every C and H atom, leaving just the carbon skeleton and functional groups
structural isomers
compounds with the same molecular formula but different structural formula
homolytic fission
the breaking of a covalent bond evenly to form two radicals
heterolytic fission
the breaking of a covalent bond unevenly to form two ions
