Basic Anatomical Terms Flashcards
Regions of the body
head, neck, thorax (chest), abdomen, inguinal region, pelvis and perineum, upper limb, lower limb, back
anatomical position
standing facing forwards, palms face up, face and eyes anterior, upper limbs by side, feet together, toes pointing anteriorly
patient position supine
lying on their back
patient position prone
lying on stomach
sagittal plane
through front-back
coronal plane
through coronal suture
axial plane
through the middle (i.e. CT)
anterior and posterior
front and back
superior and inferior
close to head or feet
cranial or caudal
close to head or feet
medial or lateral
close to midline or away
proximal or distal
near attachment to body or away from
superficial or deep
near surface of body or further
external or internal
further from centre of body or organ or nearer
dorsal
posterior surface
volar
anterior surface of wrist
palmar
anterior surface of hand (referring to anatomical position)
ventral
anterior surface of the tongue
plantar
inferior surface of the foot
unilateral
only found on one side of the body
bilateral
normally paired structures
midline
single structure in/or near midline
ipsilateral
structure on the same side of the body as the other structure
contralateral
structure lies on opposite site of the body
flexion
decreasing the angle between bones at joints
extension
increasing the angle between the bones at a joint
abduction
away from median place
adduction
towards median plane
internal/medial rotation
anterior surface of a limb rotates the median plane
external/lateral rotation
anterior surface of limb rotates away from the median plane
circumduction
circular motion at a joint
eversion
sole of foot moves away from median plane such that the sole faces laterally
inversion
sole of foot rotates towards the median plane such that the sole faces medially
supination
hold the bowl of soup :)
pronation
palm turns posteriorly from anatomical position
semi-prone
position of forearm hand midway between supine and prone positions
reposition of digits
spread thumb from pinky
opposition of digits
thumb and pinky come together
elevation
superior movement of shoulder
depression
inferior movement of shoulders
protraction (protrusion)
anterior movement of shoulder or jaw
retraction (retrusion of jaw)
posterior movement of shoulder or jaw
lateral flexion
flex from the belly button out
