Basic Airway Management Flashcards
Manual maneuvers
Jaw thrust, head tilt chin lift
Oropharyngeal airway
Measured from corner of the mouth to tip of earlobe/angle of the jaw
Nasopharyngeal airway
Measured from tip of the nose to the earlobe
Oxygen cylinders
Store pure oxygen, always check label and test date, various sizes, oxygen delivery is measured in L/min
When to replace oxygen cylinder
When pressure falls to 200 psi or lower (safe constant)
How to calculate how long a tank will last
Tank factor X (psi on gauge) divided by L/min to be delivered
Oxygen regulators
Bourbon-Gauge Flowmeter, Pressure-Compensated Flowmeter
Oxygen humidifier
Bottle of sterile water that moisturizers oxygen; keep upright - only practical with fixed unit on ambulance
Nasal cannula
Two small prongs; 24%-44% O2, best for patients who need long term O2 therapy
When is a nasal cannula ineffective?
Apnea- poor respiratory effort, severe hypoxia, mouth breathing
Nonrebreather Mask
Preferred in pre-hospital setting; 90%-100% O2, mask and reservoir bag
Tracheostomy Masks
Cover the stoma and have a strap that goes around the neck; improvise by placing a face mask over the stoma
Positive pressure ventilation
Patient is not breathing/breathing inadequately; need artificial ventilation with high flow supplemental oxygen.
Bag-Valve-Mask Device
Can deliver nearly 100% O2, column of O2 to deliver is based on visible chest rise
Bag-Valve-Mask Device Technique is not adequate if?
Chest does not rise and fall, rate of ventilation is to slow or to fast, pulse rate does not improve
