Basal ganglia & cerebellar pathology terms Flashcards
akinesia
inability to initiate movement
athetosis
slow, involuntary, writhing, twisting movements
bradykinesia
decreased amplitude and velocity of voluntary movement (parkinson’s)
chorea
involuntary, rapid, irregular, jerky movements involving multiple joints (huntington’s disease)
dystonia
sustained involuntary contractions of agonist & antagonist muscles causing abnormal posturing
hyperkinesia
increased muscle activity or movement
hypokinesia
decreased motor response especially to a specific stimulus
rigidity
increase in muscle tone causing greater resistance to passive movement (lead pipe; cogwheel)
tremor
involuntary, rhythmic, oscillatory movement (resting, intention, postural)
ataxia
loss of muscle coordination as a result of cerebellar pathology
gait ataxia
typically includes broad BOS, arms in high guard position, stepping pattern is irregular in distance and direction
cerebellar dysarthria
disorder of motor component of speech articulation
dysdiadochokinesia
impaired ability to perform rapid alternating movements
dysmetria
inability to judge distance or range of movement (hypermetria; hypometria)
hypotonia
decrease in muscle tone
