What are the 4 types of barriers?
Physical, Psychological, Cultural, and Linguistic
External barrier/environmental condition, can be a product of human creation
Physical barrier
Also called as mental barriers, refers to social and personal issues of speaker towards communicating with others
Psychological barrier
Communication problems encountered by people regarding their intrinsic values, beliefs, and traditions in conflict with others
Cultural barrier
Conflicts with language and word meanings. Words carry denotative and connotative meanings, they can sometimes cause confusion and misunderstandings.
Linguistic barrier
Classifications of noise according to Verdeber (1991)
External, Internal, Semantic Noises
Sight, sound and other stimuli that draw people’s attention away from intended meaning.
External Noise
Anything going on inside the body of the transactor which causes a distraction
Internal Noise
Alternate meanings aroused by a speaker’s symbols
Semantic Noise
Dog barking, noise from vehicles, singing in the neighborhood
External Noise
Headache, stomachache, phobias
Internal Noise
Incorrect grammar, use of idiomatic expressions, use of excessive technical jargon
