Banner Knee Injuries Flashcards
An injury to which ligaments will cause bleeding?
ACL and PCL (intracapsular ligaments)
Which part of the meniscus will cause bleeding?
peripheral 1/3rd
What happens if you lose meniscus?
get arthritis (due to loss of dissipation of force)
Which part of the meniscus being removed would more likely cause arthritis?
removing the lateral lmeniscus
If you have latteral collateral ligament tear you have to worry about the (blank) nerve
common fibular (peroneal) nerve
Which is more commonly injured, the PCL or ACL
ACL
What are these: PATELLAR TENDON QUADRICEPS TENDON HAMSTRING TENDONS POPLITEUS TENDON
commonly injured extensor mechanisms
Immediate (blank) indicates a tear or something really bad
swelling
What symptoms indicate need for further evaluation?
pain swelling inability to bear weight loss of motion instability deformity
What does the ACL do?
resists anterior translation and medial rotation of the tibia, in relation to the femur.
What does the PCL do?
resist forces pushing the tibia posteriorly relative to the femur.
What is the exam that tests for ACL insufficiency?
lachmann exam
how do you perform the lachman exam?
knee held in 15 degrees of flexion, femur stabilized, tibia tranlsated anteriorly, amount of translation and lack of end point recorded
What does crepitus indicate?
loose body, meniscus tear
What does the pivot shift test, test for?
Anterolateral Knee Instability
How do you know if you have a fracture of the bone?
you will take a arthrocentesis, see blood, and if you have a fracture, the fat will rise to the top
The nutrition for the entire articular surface comes from the (blank)
synovial fluid
What are four ways you can get traumatic bloody effusion?
ACL tear
intra-articular fracture
osteochondral injury
peripheral meniscal tear
Does a meniscus tear have healing potential?
yes if it is peripheral, no if it is central
What kind of injury is this:
IMPACT INJURY
DIFFICULT TO DIAGNOSE
MICROFRACTURE
articular cartilage
How do you fix articular cartilage?
with an osteochondral fracture: autograft, allograft transfer
or chondrocyte implantation
If you have a dislocated knee, what is your biggest concern?
vascular (politeal artery)
How do you describe displacement?
distal to proximal (i.e direction of tibial displacement)
When you have a high energy injury to your knee, what will this result in?
multiligament disruption
