Bandura Flashcards
Aim
To investigate the extent to which children would imitate aggression modelled by an adult and to investigate the effects of gender on imitation
Participants
72 children 3-5
Equal gender
What design?
Independent measures
Which effects of IV was measured?
Behaviour of model
Sex of model
Sex of children
How many conditions
8
Describe grouping and what they witnessed
12 B and 12 G exposed to aggressive model -6/6 same sex, 6/ 6opposite sex
12 B 12 G exposed to none aggressive model - 6/6 same sex -6/6 opposite sex
12B 12G did not see model displaying any behaviour
What were the three stages of the procedure
Modelling the behaviour
-individually brought into room, see if they imitated adult
Aggression arousal
- taken to different room to play with toys then told to stop
Testing for delayed imitation
-observed 20 minutes
What were the three types of aggression?
Imitative
Partially imitative
Non imitative - new acts not demonstrated by model
What did the results show?
Boys more physically aggressive than girls
Girls more verbally aggressive
Boys significantly more likely to imitate male models
Children who witnessed aggression significantly more aggressive themselves
Difference in male imitative physical aggression after witnessing aggressive male and aggressive female
Male- 25.4
Female- 12.8
Conclusion
Children can acquire aggression through observation of adult modelling aggression
