Badderley 1966 (classic) Flashcards
what was the aim of the baddeley 1966 study?
to find out if LTM encodes acoustically or semantically
what type of experiment did baddeley use for his 1966 study?
lab experiment in cambridge uni
what was the sample for baddeley 1966?
males and females from cambridge universities’ ‘subject panel”
-list A had 15 participants
-list B had 20 participants
-list C had 16 participants
-list D had 21 participants
which sample was control?
-list B controlled for acousically similar list A
-list D controlled for semantically similar list C
what was the IV of baddeley 1966?
type of words - acoustically similar + dissimilar, semantically similar and dissimilar
what was the DV of baddeley 1966?
score of the surprise retest out of ten, words had to be in correct order
explain the procedure of baddeley 1966?
each participant took part in 4 trials and a surprise retest.
what was involved in each of the four trials?
10 words presented on a slide projector at a rate of 3 seconds per words, slide took 2 secs to change over.
participants were then given an interference tasks which was 6, 8 digit sequences read out a rate of 1 second per digit and allowed 8 seconds to write out each sequence. participants then had one minute to recall the initial 10 word sequence in correct order
what happened after the four trials?
15 minute self paced digit copying task
what happened last in the baddeley study?
surprise recall test
what are two simple conclusions drawn from the baddeley 1966 study?
LTM encodes semantically
STM encodes acoustically
