Bacteriology Flashcards
Name the 3 types of bacterial energy processes
Cell respiration (oxidation phosphorylation)
Fermentation (substrate level phosphorylation)
Photosynthesis (photophosphorylation)
How is energy released from glucose?
The stages of aerobic respiration: Glycolysis Krebs Cycle ETC Chemiosmosis
Name 3 applications of microbial metabolism
In vitro cultivation Biochemical based classification Production of biomolecules Targets for antimicrobial agents Ecosystem modelling
What is the metabolism?
Uptake of chemicals from the environment, their trnasformation within the cell and elimination of wastes into the environment.
What is an anabolic reaction?
Biosynthetic, endergonic, macromolecules
What is a catabolic reaction?
Degredative, exergonic, energy and precursor molecules
What is oxidation?
The removal of an electron
What is reduction?
The addition of an electron
What is a redox reaction?
When an electron is doanted by a donor and accepted by an acceptor
What is the reduction potential?
The ability for a compound to become reduced
What is glycolysis?
The splitting of glucose to pyruvate
Glucose is partially oxidised
ATP is generated
What is the Krebs cycle?
Most of the redox reactions in the catabolism of glucose take place here
NADH, FADH and GTP are generated
