Bacterial Infections Flashcards
How to tell if bacteria is gram positive or gram negative
Gram-positive bacteria stain blue and pink with Gram stain. This is retained when washed with ethanol and water.
Gram-negative bacteria do not retain Gram stain when washed with ethanol and acetone.
Examples of Gram Positive bacterial infections
Staphylococcal Streptococcoal Anthrax Diphtheria Listeriosis Nocardia
Difference in appearance under microscope between Staphylococci and Streptococci
Staph grow in clusters
Strep grow in pairs or chains
Diseases caused by Staphylococcus aureus
Skin infections Osteomyelitis Pneumonia Endocarditis Toxic shock syndrome
Virulence factors of Staphylococcus
SET:
Surface proteins for adherence
Enzymes
Toxins
Diseases caused by Streptococcal infections
Pneumonia and meningitis
Diseases caused by enterococci (type of Strep)
Urinary tract infections
Endocarditis
Are Streptococci aerobic or anaerobic
Facultative or obligate anaerobes
Virulence factors of Streptococci
Capsules, which resist phagocytosis
M protein, which inhibits the alternative pathway of the complement system
Pneumolysin, which destroys the membranes of host cells
What is anthrax
Spre forming Bacillus
What gram-positive bacteria causes Diphtheria
Corynebacterium diphtheriae
Features of Corynebacterium diphtheriae
Rod shaped
Exotoxin causes damage to heart and nerves
What gram-positive bacteria causes nocardia
Nocardia asteroides
Features of Nocardia asteroides
Aerobic
Grows in branched chains
Causes opportunistic infections with central nervous system involvement
What gram-positive bacteria causes listeriosis
Listeria monocytogenes
