Bacterial biofilms Flashcards
What are bacterial biofilms?
Aggregates of bacterial cells in matrix created by themselves which offers protection; they are usually attached to a surface
How are bacteria usually found?
In biofilms
What is the percentage of bacterial cells to EPS?
10-30% bacterial cells
70-90% EPS
What is EPS made of?
eDNA, proteins, amyloid fibres, lipids and environmental components
How is a bacterial biofilm formed?
5 stages:
- Initial attachment
- Irreversible attachment
- Maturation I
- Maturation II
- Dispersion
Staphylococcus epidermidis
Prolific biofilm former
What triggers biofilm formation?
N-acyl-monoserine lactones
Oligopeptides
Autoinducer 2
What is the growth rate like compared to planktonic bacteria?
Lower
Antibiotic resistance?
10-100 increase
16,000 fold increase in plasmid conjugation
Gingivitis
Leads to periodontis caused by biofilm of actinobacter
Chronic wounds
Biofilm formation is common
CF patients
P. aeruginosa
MSCRAMMS? What are they and what has them?
- fibronectin
- fibrinogen
- collagen
- laminin
S. aureus and s, epidermidis
