Bacteria Oxygen and Temperature Requirements Flashcards
Obligate Aerobe and example
Bacteria that requires oxygen to live and survive. It must have it or it’ll die!
-Bacillus subtilis
Obligate Anaerobe and example
Bacteria that are killed by oxygen.
-Clostridium botulinum
Aerotolerant Anaerobe and example
Bacteria that don’t need oxygen, but won’t affect them if present.
-Lactobacillus casei
Facultative Anaerobe and example
Bacteria that can use oxygen, but can continue to grow without it.
-Escherichia
Microqerophile
Bacteria that can only use 2-10% of oxygen at lower levels and require it!
-Helicobager pylori
4H2O
Water
O2- is this deadly?
Superoxide anion YES!!!!!
H2O2 is this deadly?
Hydrogen Peroxide YES!!!!!!
What enzyme is used to defend against Superoxide anion?
Superoxide dismutase
What enzyme is used to defend against Hydrogen Peroxide?
Catalase
Why are Obligate Anaerobes sensitive to oxygen?
They don’t have the enzyme to break down the molecule!!
