Bacteria cells Flashcards
What type of cell are bacteria?
Bacteria are single-celled organisms and are all prokaryotic so they don’t contain a nucleus or any other structures surrounded by membrane.
What are the structures of a bacteria cell?
A Bacteria cell contains chromosomal DNA, plasmid DNA, Flagella, cytoplasm, cell membrane, cell wall, ribosomes and pili.
How do bacteria organisms divide?
They copy themselves through binary fission.
How do bacteria get energy?
Some can photosythesis however most feed off other dead or living organisms.
What is an example of a bacteria cell?
A lactobacillus bulgaricus, this is a rod-shaped bacterium used in the production of yoghurt from milk.
What type of bacteria causes pneumonia?
Pneumococcus, which is a spherical bacterium that acts as a pathogen
What is chromosomal DNA?
It is a type of DNA cell which is found loose in the cytoplasm instead of contained in a nucleus.
What is a plasmid/plasmid DNA?
This is small closed circles of DNA found in the cytoplasm. Unlike chromosomal DNA these can move from on Bactria to another giving it variation.
What is a flagella?
A flagella is a a tail-looking structure found on the outside of a cell which can rotate or move in a whip like motion allowing the cell to move. Bacteria can have one or more flagella.
