Bacs be requiring stuff Flashcards
Obligate aerobe definition & type of respiration
Only grows in the presence of oxygen, uses Aerobic respiration (like us)
Dependent on oxygen
Obligate Anaerobe definition & type of respiration
Only grows without oxygen, uses Anaerobic respiration, different electron acceptor for electron transport chain than O2
poisoned by oxygen
Micro-aerophile definition & type of respiration
Typically obligate aerobe, but prefers lower concentrations of O2
Aerobic respiration, but poisoned by too much oxygen
Facultative anaerobe definition & type of respiration
Prefers aerobic, but can make low O2 conditions work,
Aerobic respiration and fermentation
Aerotolerant anaerobe definition & type of respiration
Uses fermentation, can exist with O2, not poisoned, but doesn’t use it at all. Doesn’t need to be by oxygen
Mesophile
15-40 degrees C (we are 37 deg C)
ex Escherichia coli, Salmonella, and most of the common bacteria
Psychrophile
<15 deg C
ex Chryseobacterium greenlandensis
Psychrotroph
Cold tolerant, the fridge wont save you! optimal growth at 15-40 deg C
ex Listeria monocytogenes
Thermophile
50-80 deg C (Thermus aquaticus ex. first PCRed DNA or something?)
Hyperthermophile
> 80 deg, found in hot springs, deep sea thermal vents, ex Geogemma barossi
Neutrophile
5.5-8.5 pH (neutral)
Acidiophile
<5.5, think volcanic conditions, very/acidic
Alkaliphile
> 8.5 Requires high pH very/basic
Halophile
High salt, not in ocean think salt flats ex Halophilic archaea
Halotroph
tolerates high salt, ex some cyanobacteria can grow in marine environments, high salt environments, and in freshwater environments
