Antispasmodics
Baclofen Action
Acts in the CNS to enhance GABA, produce sedative effects, and depress hyperactive spasticity of muscles. There are no direct effects on skeletal muscles.
Baclofen Use
Relief of spasticity related to cerebral palsy, spinal cord injury, and multiple sclerosis
Baclofen Complications
Nausea, constipation, urinary retention, seizures
Baclofen Contrainidications
Safety not established for pregnancy or lactation
Hypersensitive
Baclofen Interations
CNS depressants (alcohol, opioids, antihistamines) have additive CNS depressant effects, and can cause severe respiratory depression
Baclofen Education
Monitor for adverse effects and notify the provider if they occur.
Take with meals to reduce gastric upset.
Increase intake of high-fiber foods.
Avoid driving
