Backpack recommendations
Backpack should not weigh more than 10% of the students body weight
•Choose the correct backpack size to fit student
•Carry only necessary items
•Hand carry some items
Wearing recommendations
The bottom of the pack should never rest more than 4 inches below the student’s waistline
•Distribute weight evenly between both straps
•Use padded straps
•Utilize waist and sternum straps
•Heaviest items need to be stored closest to the back
What could you recommend that a student reduce the load?
- Carry only necessary books to class
- Use lockers
- Use eBooks
- Hand carry books
- Buy lunch at school instead of bringing a lunch

What would you recommend to school administrator?
- Give handouts
- E-books
- Choose textbooks with web support or online versions
- Copy pages that would be needed at home
- Locker availability and time allotted in between classes to retrieve books
- Have a copy of textbook for students to take home and one to keep at school
- Paperback textbooks instead of hardbacks
- Teacher should tell students what books to bring
