Why do you want to study medicine?
Always wanted to, became clear 3 years ago.
• Intellectually challenging
• Allows me to problem solve
• Versatile allow me to teach whilst committing to life long learning
• Help people get better, position to treat the cause of the problem
If you were not offered a place to study medicine, what would you do?
- Reapply
- Self reflect on what I can improve
- Request feedback, in person if possibly
- Whilst continuing to work in the NHS
What aspects of medicine appeal to you?
- Being in a position to help people and make a difference in their lives
- Being a teacher
- It’s challenging, and intellectually stimulating
What aspects of medicine don’t appeal to you?
- Stress
- Death
- Work-life balance
- Low morale
Can non-scientific hobbies add to a persons ability to be a good doctor, and why?
Can you think of any example in your own case?
Yes. Medicine is a science and art, can just develop the one side. Patients are people with a load of different interest.
• Exercise (swim/gym) - discipline and health
• Gaming - logic and brain training
• Reading and cinema - escapism and stress relief
• Eating out - socialising
What do you find interesting about medicine?
- How the body can be manipulated to cause damage, and vice versa
- The people behind the disease, socioeconomic values/race/gender increasing statistical risk
What do you want to achieve from your medical career?
- Help people, in hospital and community
* Be part of the NHS, making positive change
Why not a nurse?
- Nursing is a different skill set, I feel more suited for being a doctor
- More satisfaction from the intellectual stimulation
- Link disease to the medical science
