Background Flashcards
What is the general rule of drug metabolism?
Generally, drugs undergo Phase 1 metabolism, followeed by Phase 2 metabolism to make the drug even more polar for elimination.
What is the exeptions to the rule?
Some drugs may go straight to Phase 2 metabolism
Some drugs are metabolised to form more LIPOPHILIC compounds, and these undergo more biotransformation before elimination
What is Conjugation, and what enzymes are involved?
The covalent attachment of small hydrophilic molecules to form water soluble compounds that are more hydrophilic. The final compounds have a larger molecular weight. There are many different wnzymes involved, due to Polymorphism.
What are the possible reactions that could occur?
Glucuronidation, Sulphation Amino acids Acetylation Methylation
