Back to Basics Flashcards
What is molar concentration or molarity?
The amount of solute dissolved in 1L of solution
What is the solute concentration?
The amount of solute dissolved in a given quantity of solution
What is the equation for molarity?
Molarity = moles of solute/litres of solution
What is the relative molecular mass (RMM)?
The sum of the relative atomic masses of the atoms in a molecule
What is the molar mass?
Mass of one mole of substance
What is mass percent per volume? (%(w/v))
The number of grams of spite per 100mL of solution
What is mole fraction?
Mole of substance divided by total number of mole
What is milliequivalent (mEq)?
Concentration of an ion in solution
What is a simple dilution?
When a volume of the a concentrated stock solution is added to a volume of solvent to achieve the required concentration
Is the moles of solute the same before and after the dilution process?
Yes , the concentration decreases and volume increased by adding solvent but moles stay constant
Does water conduct electricity?
Only when it contains ions
What is an electrolyte?
A substances that completely dissociates into ions so can conduct electricity
What is an nonelectrolyte?
A substance that does not dissociate into ions so can’t conduct electricity
What are strong electrolytes? And give an example.
100% dissociation exists almost entirely as ions. E.g. HCL(aq)➡️H+(aq) + Cl-(aq)
What is a weak electrolyte? And give an example.
Not completely dissociated, small percentage of ions. E.g. NH3(aq) + H20(l)↔️ NH4+(aq) + OH-(aq)
