Back Arthrology Flashcards
3 Categories of joints
Synovial (Diarthrosis)
Fibrous (Synarthrosis)
Cartilaginous (Amphiarthrosis)
Synovial Joint with unaxial/gliding/sliding movement
Planar
Synovial uniaxial hinge joint
Ginglymus
Synovial pivoting joint with uniaxial rotation
Trochoid
Synovial biaxial joint with one or two surfaces articulating with one or two convex surfaces
Condyloid
Synovial biaxial saddle joint, both surfaces are convex and concave, false circumduction without rotation
Sellar
Synovial multiaxial ball and socket joint, allows circumduction in multiple planes
Spheroidal
What is a compound synovial joint?
A combination of any type of the synovial joints
Fibrous joint of interlocked bone separated by fibrous connective tissue
Suture
Fibrous interlocking bone with a jagged edge
Serrated suture
Fibrous joined bone with two beveled surfaces
Squamous suture
Fibrous joint of two blunt ends joined by fibrous connective tissue
Planar suture
Fibrous tongue-in-groove joined by fibrous connective tissue
Schindylesis
Fibrous peg-in-socket joined by fibrous connective tissue
Gomphosis
Fibrous joint of two bones separated by a fibrous membrane
Syndesmosis
Primary cartilagenous joint characterized by temporary cartilaginous unions of hyaline cartilage between the Diaphysis and the Epiphysis of growing bone
Synchondrosis
Secondary cartilagenous joint characterized by strong slightly moveable joints united by fibrocartilage
Symphysis
What is a joint that includes articulations from more than one of the 3 main categories of joints?
Compound joint
What kind of compound joint is C1/C2?
Compound Synovial joint (planar and trochoid)
What is the joint between the Uncinate Process of the Inferior Vertebra and beveled inferior surface of the superior vertebra?
Uncovertebral Joint (of Luschka)
