Name this vertebrae- the spinous process of this vertebra appears to move anteriorly when the neck is hyper-extended
C6
Name this vertebrae- the spinous process of this vertebra does not
slide forward much when neck is hyperextended, but the transverse processes can be felt to rotate when the head is turned from side to side
C7
Name this vertebra- this can be more prominent than C7, but the spinous process of this vertebra remains in the same position when the head is moved from side to side and up and down.
T1
Name the vertebra- the spinous process is approximately level with the medial end of the scapular spine
T3
Name this vertebra- The spinous process is approximatelylevel with the top of the iliac crest

C1 is also know as
Atlas
C2 is also known as?
Axis
Describe why C1 is different?
The atlas is the most superior vertebra and supports the skull. It articulates with the occiput of the skull at the atlantooccipital joint, which is a synovial joint. This joint allows flexion of the neck
(upward and downward movement of the head or nodding).
Describe why C2 is different?
The axis is the second vertebra and articulates with the atlas at the atlantoaxial joint. This is a complex joint formed of three synovial joints and is classified as a pivot joint. This allows rotation of the head by allowing the skull to pivot on the odontoid process of the axial bone. It also stabilises the head in a neutral position.
