17
Q

C2 is also known as?

18
Q

Describe why C1 is different?

A

The atlas is the most superior vertebra and supports the skull. It articulates with the occiput of the skull at the atlantooccipital joint, which is a synovial joint. This joint allows flexion of the neck
(upward and downward movement of the head or nodding).

19
Q

Describe why C2 is different?

A

The axis is the second vertebra and articulates with the atlas at the atlantoaxial joint. This is a complex joint formed of three synovial joints and is classified as a pivot joint. This allows rotation of the head by allowing the skull to pivot on the odontoid process of the axial bone. It also stabilises the head in a neutral position.
