B9b Translocation Flashcards
What is translocation?
Movement of dissolved sugar from the leaves to the rest of the plant.
Name the tissue used to transport food around a plant
Phloem
How is phloem adapted for its function?
Elongated living cells
Sieve plates connect cells together so that food can move to the next cell.
Phloem cells contain very few sub-cellular structures to allow the efficient transport of substances.
Why do roots need a supply of food?
Respiration - to supply energy
Storage
Name the tissues found in a leaf
Epidermis
Palisade mesophyll
Spongy mesophyll
Xylem
Phloem
Guard cells
What is the function of the palisade mesophyll cells?
Photosynthesis
What is the function of the spongy mesophyll cells?
Photosynthesis and gas exchange.
