B9 - Respiration Flashcards
Cellular respiration?
Exothermic reaction that occurs continuously in living cells
Word equation for aerobic respiration?
Glucose + oxygen –> carbon dioxide + water
What do you muscles store glucose as?
Glycogen
During exercise..?
- Glycogen stores in the muscles are converted to glucose for cellular respiration.
- Increase in heart rate, breathing rate and breathing volume
- Flow of oxygenated blood to muscles increases
Define anaerobic respiration?
Respiration without oxygen.
What is glucose broken down into in anaerobic respiration during exercice in humans?
Lactic acid
After working for a long time, muscles….
Become fatigued and don’t contract efficiently. If oxygen is limited, anaerobic respiration occurs
Define oxygen debt?
The extra oxygen that must be taken into the body after exercise has stopped to complete the breakdown of lactic acid.
What does metabolism include?
- Conversion of glucose into starch
- Glycogen used to make cellulose
- Formation of lipid molecules
- Use of glucose and nitrate ions to make amino acids (used in protein synthesis and the break down of excess proteins into urea)
Where is lactic acid converted into glucose?
The liver
