B9 Flashcards
What do organisms use energy transferred by aerobic respiration for?
-Synthesising molecules
-Muscle contraction
-Active transport
-Maintain conditions
What happens to your body while you exercise?
-Your HR increases and your blood vessels dilate
-Your breathing rate and volume will increase
What is the name of the storage molecule that muscles use to store glucose?
Glycogen
What is an oxygen debt?
The extra oxygen needed to break down lactic acid in your body into carbon dioxide and water
What are the products of anaerobic respiration in plants and in yeast cells?
Ethanol and carbon dioxide
List some functions of the liver:
(Excluding production of bile)
-Amino acids are converted to urea in deamination
-Substances such as ethanol (I think) are detoxified in the liver- breakdown products transported to the kidneys and are excreted
-Old red blood cells broken down- iron stored to make new ones
-Lactic acid is converted to glucose (and is then broken down into carbon dioxide and water during aerobic respiration)
Compare anaerobic respiration in yeast and muscle cells:
-Yeast produces ethanol but
muscles produce lactic acid
-Yeast produces CO2 but
muscles do not
-Both release small amounts of
energy
