Non communicable diseases
What is the definition of a non communicable disease
A disease that cannot be spread by infections or spread by touch
Give 3 examples of non communicable diseases
Cancer
Type 2 diabetes
Alzheimer’s
Give 3 examples of how smoking can increase risk of non communicable diseases
1) lung cancer/ failure from tar buildup in the lungs
2) heart related issues from either excess stress on heart or blocked arteries
3) tongue/ mouth/ throat cancer from chemicals and tobacco
Give 3 examples of how lack of exercise can lead to an increased risk in non communicable diseases
1) increased weight can lead to arthritis as the bones are compressed and then wear down
2) increased weight can also lead to excessive stress and strain on the heart causing heart related issues such as strokes and heart attacks
3) Diabetes (type 2) because of a poor diet there is to much sugar in the bloodstream
What are the 2 types of cancer?
Benign and malignant
Give 3 differences between a malignant tumour and a benign tumour
1) Benign tumours are less difficult to operate on than malignant tumours
2) malignant tumours are capible of growing further and potentially causing secondary tumours while benign tumours are self incapsulated.
3) Malignant tumours are quicker growing and more aggressive while benign tumours glow slower and are more passive
Give 2 similarities between malignant and benign tumours
Both made of mutated cells
Both can exert pressure on neighbouring organs
Give 5 examples of problems with alcohol
1) addiction can lead to other issues
2) liver disease or failure can cause death due to excess poison in the bloodstream which would have been filtered out by the liver
3) alcohol causes slower reactions and neurological activity leading to long term memory problems
4) alcohol can make people feel angry and due to a lack of judgement they can turn violent quickly
5) death
Give 3 positives of alcohol consumption
1) small amounts can thin the blood and decrease the chances of strokes and heart attacks
2) improves social capabilities and bonding
3) useful for relaxing people
