B6 - Beyond The Microscope Flashcards
What shape can bacteria be?
Spherical, rod, curved rod or spiral
What features allow bacterial cells to survive?
Flagellum for movement, cell wall to maintain shape and stop it bursting, DNA to control cells activities and replication of it.
How do bacteria reproduce?
Splitting into two- binary fission
How are bacteria successful?
Survive on range if energy sources, live in wide range of habitats, some live by taking in organic material but some can make their own food. Can reproduce quickly
What is yeast
A single celled organism
How can yeasts growth rate be altered?
Changing food availability, changing temperature, changing pH, removing waste products.
What happens to the growth Of yeast?
It doubles every 10 degrees until optimum temp is reached
Viruses can only reproduce…..
In other living cells, in specific cells.
When a virus reproduces…
Attach itself to a specific host cell, inject it’s genetic material into the cell, use the cell to make components of new viruses, cause the host cell to split open and die to release the virus.
How can disease be spread?
Food, water, air or direct contact
What are the four stages in infectious disease?
Microbe enters body, reproduces many times without causing symptoms(incubation period ),
