B4 - It's A Green World Flashcards
Two types of ecosystems
Natural or artificial
Define biodiversity
The variety of different species living In a habitat
Define habitat
Where a plant or animal lives
Define population
The number of an organism living in a community
Define community
Plants and animals living together in an ecosystem such as a garden
What does a transact line do
Maps the distribution of organisms
What is a kite diagram
Shows the results of a transect line
Why do natural woodlands have a large biodiversity (4 reasons)
Wide variety of food, food throughout the year, shelter at different heights or depths if in water and natural environment without artificial pesticides and fertilisers
Why does a forest plantation only have small biodiversity
Only a few species of trees are planted so limited food for animal species
How are ecosystems self supporting
Plants start the food chain and use the sun to make energy
Define zonation
The distribution of organisms among certain areas which is caused by non living elements such as temperature
What are the three sampling techniques
Pooter
Net
Pitfall trap
Describe a Pooter
Jar with two tubes. One tube is placed over the organism the other is used to suck the organism into the jar
Describe pitfall trap
A jar is buried in the ground with a few leaves or grass placed over the top, organisms fall in and can’t get out
What must be assumed when using the capture and recapture method?
No deaths or migration
Identical sampling techniques are used
The marking doesn’t affect the survival of the organism
