Q

What are the consequences of ketosis?

A
  • Liver damage: damaged by ketogenesis
  • Milk production and fertility decreases
  • Metabolic acidosis: Ketone bodies become acidic
  • Loss of ketone bodies through urine, causing energy loss

Q

Why are fatty cows more prone to develop ketosis?

A

Because they produce more leptin, inhibiting the neuropeptide Y, causing a feeling of satiety and is causing less DMI and the NEB becomes worse

Q

How to avoid ketosis?

A
  • Feed intake is monitored to avoid obesity
. Given high concentrates mixed with either sugar beet pulp or molasses to increase the energy
  • Glugogenic compounds is given
  • Give niacin (vitamin B5/nicotinic acid) to take the burden off the liver, to prevent ketogenesis
