B6 Flashcards
1
Q
What is ketosis?
A
A metabolic disease in which the cow is in a Negative Energy Balance, there is not enough DMI to cover the energy requirmenets for the 1st phase of lactation
2
Q
When is the cow more prone to ketosis?
A
Immediately after calving
3
Q
What are the consequences of ketosis?
A
- Liver damage: damaged by ketogenesis
- Milk production and fertility decreases
- Metabolic acidosis: Ketone bodies become acidic
- Loss of ketone bodies through urine, causing energy loss
4
Q
Why are fatty cows more prone to develop ketosis?
A
Because they produce more leptin, inhibiting the neuropeptide Y, causing a feeling of satiety and is causing less DMI and the NEB becomes worse
5
Q
How to avoid ketosis?
A
- Feed intake is monitored to avoid obesity
. Given high concentrates mixed with either sugar beet pulp or molasses to increase the energy - Glugogenic compounds is given
- Give niacin (vitamin B5/nicotinic acid) to take the burden off the liver, to prevent ketogenesis
6
Q
How is ketosis evaluated?
A
Based in blood, milk and urine body count.
