B5 - Mitosis Flashcards
1
Q
What is the cell cycle?
A
Cells divide over and over again.
2
Q
How do the DNA molecules duplicate?
A
- A molecule of DNA splits.
- Bases on free-floating nucleotides pair up with matching based on DNA.
- Cross links form allowing the nucleotides to join. Two chromosomes produced.
3
Q
Describe the process of mitosis in five steps…
A
- The DNA is spread out in long strings.
- The DNA forms X shaped chromosomes. Each side of the X is a copy of the other.
- Cell fibres pull apart the chromosomes.
- Membranes separate the two sets of chromosomes and the cytoplasm divides.
- The cell divides to form two cells identical to the mother cell.
4
Q
Mitosis is needed because …
A
This allows cells to divide and produce more cells for growth and repair.
