B5 - Making Proteins Flashcards
1
Q
What are the four bases called?
A
Adenine, thymine, guanine, cytosine.
2
Q
A gene is …
A
A section of DNA containing the instructions to make one protein.
3
Q
The strands of DNA are held together by..
A
The bases.
4
Q
Describe how cells produce proteins..
A
Cells put animo acids together. The order of these is determined by the order of bases. The order of animo acids determines the protein made.
5
Q
How many bases for one animo acid?
A
Three.
6
Q
How does protein synthesis work?
A
- The DNA unzips.
- The mRNA is made using DNA as the template. This is much smaller than DNA and can fit through the partially permeable membrane.
- The mRNA joins with the ribosome in the cytoplasm.
- The ribosome sticks animo acids together in a chain to make a protein.
7
Q
What does a DNA molecule consist of?
A
A double helix which is held together by bases on nucleotides.
