A
He saw that more woman died in childbirth when delivered by medical students than midwifes. He thought that the students were spreading bacteria from the dead bodies they were dissecting to the woman so he made them wash there hands - reducing the number of deaths

- Mucus in nose and throat traps bacteria
- Acid in stomach kills bacteria
- Skin acts as a natural barrier

- Cell wall is made of cellulose which is hard for pathogens to penetrate
- Plants produce antibacterial chemicals that we use in medicine
- Deciduous trees lose there leaves in autumn so pathogens that infect them fall with them
