B.16 Flashcards
What is a consumer
Organisms that have to eat other organisms for energy
What are producers
Organisms that can produce there own energy
What is a predator
A consumer that eats other consumers for energy
What is prey
A consumer that is eaten by other consumers for energy
What is the decay cycle
The decay cycle shows how nutrients and minerals are recycled throughout an ecosystem
What is the hydrological cycle
The cycle shows how water is recycled throughout an ecosystem
What are decomposers
Bacteria and fungi that break down waste products and dead bodies to release the minerals they contain into the soil and atmosphere
What are detritovores
Worms, maggots and some beetles that often start the decomposition process by breaking down waste products and dead bodies into smaller parts
Describe what happens through perculation
Water sinks through the cracks in rocks and flows towards a water body through groundwater flow
What is the role of photosynthesis in the carbon cycle
Photosynthesis is the only way CO2 can move from the atmosphere into living organisms
What is the role of respiration in the carbon cycle
Animals respire and release CO2 back into the atmosphere as a waste product
What is the role of combustion in the carbon cycle
Fossilised plants and animals become carbon stores like coal or oil which are dug up and burnt, realising carbon back into the atmosphere
