B5 Flashcards
Communicable diseases
Spread by pathogens. Spread can be prevented using facecoverings, social distancing, iscolation, ventalation and sanitising.
Skin
Acts as a barrier between the body and pathogens that want to enter it. Pathogens can enter a cut if it isn’t cleansped properly or doesn’t have time to form a scab.
Respiaritory system
Vulnerable to disease as it constantly takes in air and other particles into the body.
Nose
Contains hair and mucus which traps microorganisms
Trachea
Has mucus on it’s lining which traps microorganisms
Phagocyte
Ingest pathogens, digesting and destroying them so they cannot make you ill
Lymphocyte (B-cells)
Create unique antibodies (unique to the pathogen) to destroy pathogens. Can produce them faster the next time that the same pathogen enters the body.
Lymphocyte (T-cells)
Produce antitoxins which counteract the toxins released by pathogens
Measles
Potentially fatal virus. Symptoms apear 7-14 days after contracting and include: fever, cough, runny nose, inflamed eyes. Long term symptoms include blindness and brain damage. Spreads through coughing and sneezing and can be treated with a vaccine.
Salmonella
A bacterial disease contracted by eating raw meat or food prepared in unhygenic conditions. Causes salmonella food poisoning and is treated mainly with antibiotics.
Rose black Spots
A fungal disease affecting rose leaves, giving them black spots which reduce the area of the leaf which can do photosynthesis. Can be fatal. Can be prevented by keeping the rose out if the open and in clean water and is treated witt fungicides or removing leaves.
Malaria
Is a protist spread through female anopheles mosquitoes. Can kill if not treated with antimalarial medicines. Prevent with bug spray containing at least 50% DEET and covering entrances with nets covered with bug spray when sleeping.
HIV
A virus which attacks the immune system so it can’t deal with other infections. Can cause symptoms including fever, sore throught, rash ect. Infected can be given antiretroviral drugs to increase their life expectancy.
