B4(Organising Animals And Plants) Flashcards
Is blood a tissue ,why?
Blood is a tissue because its a combination of many cells.
What are the 4 main components of blood?
Red blood cells
Plasma
Platelets
White blood cells
Do red blood cells have a nucleus , why?
Red blood cells don’t have a nucleus to have more room to carry oxygen.
Name 4 factors that affect the rate of transpiration
Temperature
Humidity
Wind speed
Light intensity
How does temperature affect transpiration and why?
Higher temperatures increase the rate of transpiration because water evaporates faster in higher temperatures.
How does humidity affect transpiration and why?
Lower humidity increases the rate of transpiration because the drier the air ,the steeper the concentration gradient of water molecules between the air and leaf.
How does wind speed affect transpiration and why?
More wind increases the rate of transpiration because wind removes the water vapour quickly, maintaining a steeper concentration gradient.
How does light intensity affect transpiration and why?
Higher light intensity increases the rate of transpiration because the stomata open wider, letting more carbon dioxide enter the leaf for photosynthesis.
What is the purpose of the waxy cuticle in a leaf ?
Makes the leaf waterproof.
What is the purpose of guard cells ?
They are used to open and close the stomata.
Name the three types of blood vessels
Artery, vein and capillary
Explain what happens when you breathe in air.
Air moves into the body through the mouth and nose, down the trachea, into the bronchi, through the bronchioles, into the alveoli (air sacs). Oxygen then diffuses into the blood in the network of capillaries over the surface of the alveoli.
What do White blood Cells do ?
They are part of the immune system and defends the body against pathogens.
What is the heart made of ?
Cardiac muscle tissue.
What is the function of the platelets ?
To form blood clots which prevents the loss of blood and stops wounds from becoming infected.
Why is a leaf an organ ?
Because in the leaf, there are many different tissues which work together to perform photosynthesis.
Where are most stomata found ?
Underside of leaves.
What is the function of the stomata ?
Allows diffusion of gases into and out of the leaf.
What is the advantage to the plant of having a high number of stomata on the underside of the leaf?
Reduces the amount of water loss.
Define the term transpiration.
Movement of water from the roots to the leaves through the xylem.
What is the function of the blood vessel ‘artery’ and what is the pressure like?
Carries blood away from the heart (high pressure)
What is the function of the blood vessel ‘vein’?
Carries blood to the heart (low pressure).
What is the function of the blood vessel ‘capillary’?
Carries blood to tissues and cells.
Connects arteries and veins.
