B4 Biological molecules Flashcards
What elements are carbohydrates made of?
Carbohydrates primarily consist of the elements carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen.
What Elements are Proteins made up of?
Proteins are composed of the elements carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and sometimes sulfur.
What Elements are Fats made up of
Fats, also known as lipids, are primarily composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen.
What are starch, glycogen and cellulose are made up of?
glucose
What are amino acids made up of?
amino acids
What are fats and oils made up of
fatty acids and glycerol
Describe the use of Benedict’s solution test for reducing sugars
Benedict’s solution test detects reducing sugars by undergoing a color change from blue to green, yellow, orange, or red upon heating in their presence.
Describe the use of iodine solution test for starch
The iodine solution test produces a blue or black color in the presence of starch.
Describe the use of biuret test for proteins
The Biuret test detects proteins by producing a violet color change when treated with Biuret reagent.
Describe the use of ethanol emulsion test for fats and oils
The ethanol emulsion test is used to detect the presence of fats and oils. When a sample is mixed with ethanol and shaken vigorously, the formation of a cloudy or milky emulsion indicates the presence of fats or oils.
