b4 Flashcards
what is aerobic respiration?
aerobic respiration is the process by which organisms release energy from food
what is energy used to power?
Energy is used to power all the chemical processes necessary for life
what is the formula for aerobic respiration?
Oxygen + glucose -> water + carbon dioxide (+energy)
what is anaerobic respiration?
anaerobic respiration is respiration without oxygen and involves partial breakdown of glucose releasing energy
equation for anaerobic respiration
glucose —> lactic acid (+energy)
what is the process of yeast carrying out anaerobic respiration called?
fermentation
what is the equation for anaerobic fermentation?
Glucose —> alcohol + carbon dioxide (+energy)
what is the rate of fermentation affected by?
temperature
what are the lungs used for?
The lungs are used for breathing and gas exchange
what is the alveoli?
The alveoli in the lungs diffuses oxygen into the blood it also diffuses carbon dioxide from the blood which is then breathed out of the body
what what happens to the chest when breathing in?
breathing in occurs as the volume of the chest cavity increases by ribs moving up and out, the diaphragm moving down decreases the air pressure in the lungs and forcing air in.
what happens in the chest when breathing out?
when breathing out the volume of air decreases by the ribs moving down and in diaphragm moving up and pressure in increasing the lungs forcing air out.
what type of process is breathing
physical
what type of process is respiration?
respiration is a chemical reaction that takes place in all cells in the body of an organism
why is the alveoli effective?
The LV Ollie in the lungs is effective in gas exchange because it has a large surface area is moist and thin and has a good blood supply
what can affects positively and negatively breathing?
exercise is a positive impact on breathing asthma and smoking are negative
how do plants obtain gases?
plant obtain their gases for photosynthesis and respiration through the stomata in the leafs lower surface
what are stomata
stomata are holes that can be opened and closed by guard cells to allow carbon dioxide, oxygen and water vapour into the leaf, stoma is singular stomata is plural
