B3.2 Flashcards
what is a gland?
An organ which releases and secretes hormones
Where are hormones made
Endocrine gland
Thryoxine function
Controls how much energy your body uses/ metabolic rate
What effects does adrenaline have on someone
Happens in high stress or exciting situations
- stimulates heart rate
- contracts blood vessels
- dilating air passages
- blood flow to muscles and oxygen to lungs
What is the phrase which happens when adrenaline occurs
Adrenal glands lie near kidneys - fight or flight
Where is oestrogen and progesterone produced
Ovaries
What does oestrogen target
Targets pituitary gland and ensures that the release of FSH ensures only one egg develops
What does progesterone target?
Progesterone targets the utereus and inhibits LH, maintains uterus lining. Levels stay high through pregnancy
Where is thryoxine produced
Thyroid gland and controls how much energy is available to cells. When the body requires more energy the hypothalamus causes the pituitary gland ti release thryoid stimulating hormone (TSH)
follicle stimlating hormone
Secreted in pituitary gland, travels to ovaries and causes an egg to mature
Oestrogen
Made and secreted by ovaries, causes lining of uterus to build up
Luteinising hormone (LH)
When LH reaches a peak in the vycle, ovulation is triggerred,
Progesterone
Maintains uterus lining. Levels of this remain high throughout pregnancy
Reasons of infertility
- blocked sperm ducts
- not enoguh sperm being produced in testes
- lack of mature eggs in ovaries
- failure of the ovaries to release an egg
What are the 4 ways you can use plant hormones
Kill weeds,
Controlling dormancy,
Promotimg root growth,
Promotimg seedless fruit
