B3 - Organisation and Digestive System Flashcards
Name 5 levels of organisation
Cells
Tissues
Organs
Organ systems
Organisms
What is a tissue?
Group of cells working together with similar functions and structures.
What is an organ?
Group of tissues working together to perform function
What does liver produce?
bile
What does bile do?
Neutralises hydrochloric acid from the stomach and emulsifies fat to form small droplets with a large surface area.
What are the two functions of saliva?
- lubrication to help swallowing
- amylase to break down starch
Three enzymes in pancreas
amylase
protease
lipase
What are enzymes?
Proteins that catalyse specific reactions in organisms
Function of amylase
Break starch down into glucose
Where is amylase produced?
Salivary glands, small intestine, pancreas
Function of protease
Break protein down into amino acids
Where is protease produced?
Stomach, pancreas, small intestine
Function of lipase
Break lipids down into fatty acids and glycerol
Where is lipase produced?
Pancreas and small intestine
Two factors that affect rate enzyme activity
temperature and pH
