B12 - Homeostasis in action Flashcards
what is homeostasis
maintenance of a constant internal environment of an organism
three internal conditions controlled by homeostasis
body temperature
blood glucose concentration
water levels
three things all control systems include
receptors
coordination centres
effectors
where is body temperature controlled and measured
thermoregulatory censors in the brain
what happens if body temperature is too high
vasodilation and sweat is produced
what happens if body temperature is too high
vasoconstriction, sweating stops, and shivering takes place
function of kidneys
filter and reabsorb useful substances from the blood, and produce urine to excrete excess water, ions and urea
how are excess amino acids excreted from the body
deaminated to from ammonia in the liver - ammonia is converted to urea and excreted
hormone that controls water levels in the body
ADH
how is kidney failure treated
organ transplant or kidney dialysis
what fluid is removed from the blood in dialysis
blood
one substance that diffuses out of the blood in kidney dialysis
urea or waste products
what are proteins broken down into
amino acids
where are amino acids deaminated
liver
why does ammonia need to be excreted safely
it is toxic
