What does communicable mean?
Infectious
What is a pathogen?
A microorganism that causes disease, e.g. bacteria, fungi, virus, protist
What is measles?
A viral disease with symptoms of a fever and red skin rash
What is HIV?
A virus that causes a flu-like illness but damages the immune system and develops into AIDS
What is Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV)?
A plant virus causing discolouration of the leaves that affects the growth of the plant due to lack of photosynthesis
What is salmonella?
A bacterial disease which causes food poisoning
What is Gonorrhoea
An STD with symptoms of a thick yellow/green discharge and pain when urinating
What is rose black spot?
A fungal plant disease where purple/black spots develop on the leaves which turn yellow and drop off
What is malaria?
A disease caused by a protist where mosquitos are the vector
What is a vector?
An organism that transports a disease from person to person
What is phagocytosis?
When white blood cells engulf and digest pathogens
What are antibodies?
Tiny protein shapes produced by white blood cells to help kill pathogens
What is vaccination?
Inserting small amounts of dead or inactive forms of a pathogen to stimulate antibody production
What are antibiotics?
Medicines that cure bacterial infections by killing bacteria
What is placebo?
A fake drug given to you when you think the drug is real. Although the fake drug contains no real medicine, it tricks your body into improving.
