B3 Flashcards
Tissue
A tissue is a group of cells with similar function and structure working together.
What are organs?
Organs are collection of tissues and each organ, contains several tissues, all working together to perform a specific function.
What are muscular tissue?
This tissue can contract to bring about movement
What are glandular tissues?
Theses contains secretory cells that can produce and release substances such as enzymes and hormones
Epithelial tissue
This tissue covers the outside of your body as well as your internal organs.
Pancreas
It’s an organ that has two important functions
It makes hormones to control blood sugar.
It contains 2 very different types of tissue, which produces these different secretions.
Organ systems
A group of organs that all work together to perform specific functions.
Digestive system
This is where the process of digestion takes place.
It’s a muscular tube that squeezes your food through it.
It contains lots of different organs
They contain the pancreas and salivary glands
These glands make and release digestive juices containing enzymes to break down your food.
Carbohydrates
Provides us with the fuel that makes all of the other reactions of life possible.
They are made up of units of sugars.
They are broken down to glucose used in cellular respiration to provide energy for metabolic reactions in your cells.
Lipids
They are made up of 3 molecules of fatty acids joined to a molecule of glycerol.
They are made up of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen
They are insoluble in water
They are important in your cell membrane, hormones and your nervous system
Proteins
Building up of cells and tissues of your body as well as the basis of the enzymes.
They contain long chains called amino acids
Catalysts
Soeed up chemical reactions
Biological catalysts(enzymes)
Rate of chemical reactions is controlled by enzymes
They are large protein molecules
The long chains of amino acids are folded to produce a molecule with an active site
