Gcse Physics (Electromagnetic waves) Flashcards
Where does radio waves come from?
It is created when an alternating current in an electrical circuit creates an electromagnetic wave, radio wave.
What effects do radio waves have on the body?
Radio waves pass through the body without being absorbed.
What are radio waves being used for?
They’re used for several different things.
- Broadcasting communications, carrying signals for radio and TV.
- Satellite communication
- Navigation and radar
- Used to send signals around the world.
What effects do microwaves have on the body?
Some wavelengths of microwaves can be absorbed, causing heating of cells, which may be dangerous.
What can microwaves be used for?
It can be used for satellite communication.
Used for cooking and heating food in microwave ovens.
What effects does infrared radiation have on the body?
Mostly reflected or absorbed by the skin, causing some heating too.It can cause burns if the skin gets to a hot temperature.
What is infrared radiation used for?
Television remote controls
Cooking and heating
Security systems
Short range communication
Where does visible light come from?
Sent along optical fibres, thin glass or plastic tubes.
What effects does visible light have on the body?
Mostly absorbed or reflected by the skin but can cause some heating effects .
What is visible light used for?
Used for: Vision Photography Illumination Photosynthesis Fibre optic communication
Where does ultraviolet come from?
It comes from the sun and the UV lamps.
What effects does ultraviolet have on the body?
To protect from UV radiation, sun creams should be used to block UV waves from reaching the skin.
What can ultraviolet be used for?
It can be used for sun tan beds Security markers Fluorescent lamps Detecting forged bank notes Disinfecting water
What effects does x rays have on the body?
Can cause cell damage, similar to UV radiation.
What can x rays be used for?
Medical X rays
Observing the internal structure of objects.
Airport security scanners.
Killing cancer cells.
